2 Nevada Guard Soldiers perish in Boulder City plane crash

CARSON CITY -- Two Nevada Guard Soldiers, Sgt. 1st Class Joseph Edwards, 41, of Las Vegas, and Pfc. Cody Hall, 23, of North Las Vegas, were killed when the Beechcraft A45 they were flying off duty crashed Sunday near Boulder City, Nev. Both Soldiers were assigned to 1st Detachment, Bravo Company, 3rd/140th Security and Support, headquartered in North Las Vegas.

Neither Soldier was in a military status on Sunday. The aircraft involved was not a military aircraft, nor was it on a military mission. Both Soldiers were traditional Guardsmen who were in civilian status on Sunday.

Edwards recorded 11 years of military service and had joined the Nevada Guard in 2009. His military occupation was a helicopter repairer.

Hall, a North Las Vegas resident, had just completed his first year of military service. His military occupation was an aircraft electrician.

"Today is a very somber day for the Nevada National Guard with the loss of two Army Soldiers who had served the nation and state with exemplary military service," said Nevada Adjutant General Brig. Gen. Bill Burks. "With Nevada Guard units deployed around the world in combat, we remain mindful of the potential for casualties; to suffer two casualties in an accident right here in Nevada is especially shocking and tragic for our organization.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Sgt. 1st Class Edwards and Pfc. Hall today. Our Nevada citizens and especially our Nevada Soldiers are our most precious commodity and this is a huge loss for our state and our National Guard."

The detachment flies OH-58 observational helicopters. Its mission includes reconnaissance, surveillance and intelligence gathering and the unit often supports civilian law enforcement agencies.

Edwards and Hall were not helicopter pilots with the detachment. According to a Las Vegas newspaper, the crash is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Edwards completed a five-month deployment to Bosnia while on active duty. His previous active duty stations included Fort Ord, Calif., Fort Hood, Texas, and Germany.

Information surrounding services for Edwards and Hall is pending
